HPBOSE, which stands for Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education, is the board of school education in Himachal Pradesh, a state in northern India. HPBOSE is responsible for conducting and regulating the school education in Himachal Pradesh, from primary to secondary level. HPBOSE was established in 1969, as a successor of the Punjab School Education Board, which was functioning in Himachal Pradesh since 1964. HPBOSE started with a staff of 34 officials, and conducted the first examination for 10th class in 1970, with 18621 candidates. Since then, HPBOSE has grown in size and scope, and has introduced various reforms and innovations in the school education system in Himachal Pradesh.

In 1976, HPBOSE conducted the first examination for 12th class, with 5273 candidates.
In 1982, HPBOSE introduced the semester system for 10th and 12th classes, and also started the open school system for distance education.
In 1986, HPBOSE established the Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education Society, a registered society, for the promotion of education and culture in Himachal Pradesh.
In 1990, HPBOSE started the computerization of the examination process, and also launched the vocational education scheme for 10th and 12th classes.
In 1996, HPBOSE introduced the grading system for 10th and 12th classes, and also started the online registration of candidates and schools.

To prescribe the syllabus, courses of instructions, and textbooks for school education in Himachal Pradesh.
To conduct the examinations for 10th, 12th, JBT, TET, and other classes and courses, and to declare the results and issue the certificates and marksheets to the successful candidates.
To provide guidance, support, and supervision to the affiliated schools and institutions, and to ensure the maintenance of academic standards and quality of education.
To promote the professional development and welfare of the teachers and staff of the board and the affiliated schools and institutions.
To collaborate and coordinate with the state and central governments, and other national and international agencies, for the improvement and advancement of school education in Himachal Pradesh.

What are the Functions of HPBOSE?

The functions of HPBOSE are as follows:

To conduct the examinations for 10th, 12th, JBT, TET, and other classes and courses, and to declare the results and issue the certificates and marksheets to the successful candidates.
To prescribe the syllabus, courses of instructions, and textbooks for school education in Himachal Pradesh.
To grant affiliation and recognition to the schools and institutions that meet the prescribed norms and standards of the board.
To inspect and monitor the functioning and performance of the affiliated schools and institutions, and to take appropriate action in case of any irregularity or deficiency.
To organize and conduct various training programs, workshops, seminars, and conferences, for the professional development and welfare of the teachers and staff of the board and the affiliated schools and institutions.
To prepare and publish various reports, statistics, and research papers, on the various aspects and issues of school education in Himachal Pradesh.
To advise and assist the state and central governments, and other national and international agencies, on the matters related to school education in Himachal Pradesh.

What are the Exams Conducted by HPBOSE?

HPBOSE conducts various examinations for different classes and courses, such as:

10th Class: The examination for 10th class is conducted twice a year, in March and September, for the regular, compartment, improvement, and additional candidates. The examination consists of six subjects, namely, Hindi, English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, and an elective subject. The examination is based on the syllabus and textbooks prescribed by the board. The examination is conducted in the semester system, with two terms, each of 50 marks. The examination is of three hours duration, and the medium of instruction is Hindi or English.
12th Class: The examination for 12th class is conducted twice a year, in March and September, for the regular, compartment, improvement, and additional candidates. The examination consists of five subjects, namely, Hindi, English, and three elective subjects, depending on the stream chosen by the candidate, such as Arts, Science, Commerce, or Vocational. The examination is based on the syllabus and textbooks prescribed by the board. The examination is conducted in the semester system, with two terms, each of 50 marks. The examination is of three hours duration, and the medium of instruction is Hindi or English.
JBT: The examination for Junior Basic Training (JBT) is conducted once a year, in June or July, for the candidates who have completed the two-year diploma course in elementary education, from the recognized institutes in Himachal Pradesh. The examination consists of four subjects, namely, Hindi, English, Mathematics, and Environmental Studies. The examination is based on the syllabus and textbooks prescribed by the board. The examination is of three hours duration, and the medium of instruction is Hindi or English.
TET: The examination for Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) is conducted once a year, in November or December, for the candidates who aspire to become teachers in the government or private schools in Himachal Pradesh. The examination consists of five categories, namely, TET for JBT, TET for TGT (Arts), TET for TGT (Non-Medical), TET for TGT (Medical), and TET for Language Teacher. The examination is based on the syllabus and textbooks prescribed by the board. The examination is of two and a half hours duration, and the medium of instruction is Hindi or English.
