Azamgarh University, officially known as Maharaja Suhel Dev State University, is a state university located in Azamgarh district of Uttar Pradesh, India. It was established in 2022 by the Government of Uttar Pradesh to provide quality higher education and research opportunities to the students of eastern Uttar Pradesh. The idea of establishing a state university in Azamgarh was first proposed by the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav, in 2016. He announced that the university would be named after Maharaja Suhel Dev, who is considered as a hero and a symbol of communal harmony by the people of the region. The proposal was approved by the state cabinet in 2017, and the Maharaja Suhel Dev State University Act, 2017 was passed by the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 2018.
